Quiz Question - 14-04-2023

Which of the following statements is false about random networks and scale-free networks?

  1. The degree distribution in a random network follows a Poisson distribution, while in a scale-free network it follows a power law distribution.

  2. The random network always has a lower clustering coefficient than the scale-free network.

  3. In a scale-free network, most nodes have a low degree, while in a random network, most nodes have a high degree.

  4. The largest degree in a random network is always smaller than the largest degree in a scale-free network.

  5. None of the above.

PS: Dear professor, I am writing to kindly remind you about my last quiz queston that we talked by email. 😅
Just to help: Link to the last question. I think everything is correct, just the "trick question" (none the above)

Thank you very much in advance! 😁😁😁😁

  1. Interesting question. However, I cannot take it. Alternative A is ambiguous. On one hand, we may say that the degree distribution of a random network follows a Poisson distribution approximately. But some people will perhaps argue that the random network follows in fact a binomial distribution, which can be approximated by a Poisson, but they're not the same. Question B is also ambiguous. Maybe you want to add the the networks have the same size? How about the other parameters, such as p for the random network or gamma for the scale-free network? The way it is written, it is clearly false, because of the 'always' term. Alternative C is ambiguous, because 'low' and 'high' must be better clarified. For isnatce, for some people, 'low' may be 'below average', and 'high' would be 'above average'. For others, 'low' and 'high' might be defined with respect to a number of standard deviations below or above the average. And so on. D is also false due to the 'always' word. Take the WWW and a random network of the same size with p=1.
